A Mastery approach to Learning

You know you have ‘mastered’ something when you can apply it to a totally new problem in an unfamiliar situation. In a mastery curriculum, ALL children will achieve the learning outcome, whatever their starting point, with ‘instant intervention’ – extra help – later the same day to ensure this happens.

Learning goes deep rather than fast to ensure those connections in the brain are made and children have real understanding. In the classroom children are taught in mixed ability groupings so that children can be supported and challenged by their peers.  A key feature of the classroom is talk for learning.
